MUHI 1302 - Introduction to Music in History and Culture

Credits: 3

Introduction to the historical and cultural study of music designed to provide a big-picture overview of the role of music in diverse social contexts; to acquaint students with the central paradigms, methods, and problems of music scholarship; and to provide a critical orientation toward some of the major questions that will play a role in subsequent music history coursework. Examples are drawn from Western art music, world music, and popular music. Class readings and discussions foster the development of advanced critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in relation to musical questions.
