PHIL 3318 - Colors, Sounds, and Other Appearances

Objects look colored, they produce sounds, smells, and some have a taste. But what are these sensory appearances - colors, sounds, tastes, smells, etc. - exactly? Do they even exist or are they mere appearances produced by our brains? Could they be identified or reduced to objective physical features of the objects we perceive, or are they somehow mere projections of our minds? What can science and philosophy tell us about colors, sounds, and the like? This course offers a systematic analysis of some of these appearances, of their nature, their objectivity, and what can best explain them.
