An overview of the historical activities of women in various aspects of Christian church life – spiritual/monastic, liturgical, theological, political, and missionary – in the early and medieval/Byzantine periods, including more focused examinations of major figures such as early-church ascetics Macrina and Melania, Byzantine empresses Irene and Theodora, and Western medieval mystics Catherine of Siena and Julian of Norwich.
