Surveys the institutions, ideas, and societies that experienced the rise of capitalism from 1350 to 1870. Topics include the rise of individual ownership, the expansion of states and bureaucracies, the era of land speculation, and the growth of social movements that questioned whether capitalism had fulfilled its promises to work for the betterment of all.
