Examines the early development and the enduring cultural impact of the book - that is, the physical format of written communication known as the codex, which has dominated the intellectual landscape for the past two millennia. This survey traverses the historical forms of written communication, including cuneiform, hieroglyphs, calligraphy, woodblock, and letterpress printing, as well as the new dematerialized forms stored in digital information retrieval technologies.
