SOSC 7390 - Critical Thinking: Immigration, Race and Human Rights

Explores present-day human rights issues that U.S. immigrants encounter. Students examine (1) the law and history of immigration and race in the U.S.; (2) the laws, regulations, practices, and policies governing the ability of non-U.S. citizens to enter and remain in the U.S. either temporarily (as non-immigrants) or permanently (as immigrants); (3) recent U.S. congressional debates concerning International Human Rights’ conventions and treaties; (4) issues created by the divisiveness of the 2020 presidential election; and (5) what it means to be an American, historically and presently, and what it will mean for U.S. immigrants in years to come. May be applied to the following curricular field concentrations: human rights and social justice, humanities, American studies. (*updated* 11/4/2020; effective spring 2021)
