ASPH 3320 - The Documentary Impulse

Credits: 3

This intermediate course introduces documentary photography as a method for memorialization, preservation, storytelling, and social change, equally influenced by conceptual and journalistic traditions. Throughout the semester we identify common characteristics of documentary works by analyzing artist case studies. These artist case studies guide class discussion and serve to inspire production assignments. Ethical approaches to collaboration, editing, and distribution are emphasized along with a special focus on the relationship between text and image. Prerequisite: ASPH 1300 .
