ARHS 3321 - The Art of Medieval Science and Magic

Credits: 3

Explores the relationship between medieval science and magic through the art and other material culture that mediated between the human and the supernatural. Talismans, astrolabes, alchemical manuscripts, and fantastical maps functioned as tools of interpretation and reflection, intended to bridge the gap between the known world and the unknown. Rather than approaching the era as a superstitious and irrational one, students learn about the psychology of medieval magic and its paradoxical coexistence with the major religions of the medieval Mediterranean—Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
