Introduces the U.S. legal system and its relationship to basic principles of the rule of law. Examines the criminal and the civil law systems, focusing on key Supreme Court decisions involving current legal issues, the separation of powers, and federalism, among others. Provides an overview of the common law system of case development and explains the trial and appellate court system in the United States. Discusses the interplay between local, state, and federal laws and the role of regulatory agencies in the United States. Restricted to students in the online master of legal studies degree plan, or departmental permission for students in other degree plans.
