UNIV 2302 - The Art and Science of Game Design

Credits: 3

Explores how Generative AI has emerged as a design tool through the production of creative artifacts in digital game development. Students apply conventions of the art form of interactivity within the context of videogame design and production. Student teams use a 2D platformer game starter-kit with 2D art, C# scripts, and a licensed sound library, alongside a local instance of generative AI in order to expand the experiences of creativity in the theories of interactive media and in a classic videogame genre. Students participate in lectures and hands-on seminar discussion collaborations, team-based lab workshops, and complete a digital game group project. This course explores how mixed media technologies are changing the way we learn, work, play, teach, and communicate. It is a hands-on course in which the students learn how to use mixed media technology applications for the production of creative artifacts. Basic computer skills are recommended, but no computer programming or graphics skills are required.
