General Information

The Department of Mathematics offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in mathematics as well as a minor in mathematics. All mathematics majors, either B.S. or B.A., and minors must earn grades of at least C- in all courses taken in fulfillment of the requirements for the mathematics major or minor. MATH 6000-level courses may be taken for either the B.S. or B.A. major by students who have fulfilled the prerequisites and have departmental permission. Transfer credit for MATH 1307 , MATH 1309  or MATH 1337  will not be approved after any student matriculates to SMU, regardless of major.

Departmental Distinction - Computational Science Honors Option

A mathematics major achieving a B.S. degree may graduate with departmental distinction by completing the computational honors option. For this honors option, all of the basic major requirements will remain the same except that the following three courses are required: MATH 4316 , MATH 4317  and MATH 4370 . In addition, the student is required to complete an honors thesis/senior project and achieve a GPA of 3.300 or above in all mathematics courses. The student’s initial proposal and final product will be submitted to a three-person faculty committee for approval.
