Spanish, B.A.

The Spanish major has three tracks, for non-native, heritage and native speakers of Spanish. The distinction between heritage and native speakers is described on the Spanish page (“FAQs” tab) of the Dedman College website at smu.edu/dedman. Courses are selected in consultation with the major adviser. Study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country is strongly recommended.

Track for Heritage Speakers. Heritage speakers must replace SPAN 3358  with SPAN 4358 . From the second category below, they may select SPAN 3373 , SPAN 3374 , SPAN 3375  or SPAN 4355 .

Track for Native Speakers. Native speakers will start coursework at the 4000 level. In consultation with the area chair, native speakers who have not had formal academic training in written Spanish may begin coursework with SPAN 4358 ; otherwise, they should begin with SPAN 4357  or SPAN 4395 .
