SMU Degree Requirements

An SMU undergraduate degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and must include completion of the University’s Common Curriculum , one major and a combination of electives and/or other majors or minors. Completion of certain majors requires more than 120 hours to finish the degree. It is possible for students to concentrate their studies for computer science in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and computer organization. This is a specialization that will be included on students’ transcripts. The credit hours within this curriculum are distributed as follows:

Requirements for the Major

Mathematics and Science (24-26 Credit Hours)

Technical Electives (9 Credit Hours)

Nine credit hours of CS courses at the 3000 level or above as approved by the adviser. The adviser may approve other sufficiently technical courses from other departments to satisfy the Technical elective requirements. Technical electives cannot be satisfied by courses that are part of the student’s chosen track.

Tracks and Specializations (9-10 Credit Hours)

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Specialization (9 credit hours)

Computer Organization Specialization (9 Credit Hours)

Data Engineering Track (9 credit hours)

Game Development Track (10 credit hours)

(Must be admitted to Guildhall Professional Certificate program and attend class at SMU Guildhall.)

Software Engineering Specialization (9 credit hours)

Engineering Leadership (6 Credit Hours)

Choose two courses from the following list:

Advanced Major Electives (11 Credit Hours)

Total for the Major Only: 92-95 Credit Hours

Note: All computer science majors must earn a grade of C- or better in the computer science core courses and CS 2353  in fulfillment of the requirements for the major. Students choosing the game development track do not take CS 5351  and have a total degree requirement of 90-92 hours. Students may petition for up to 6 hours of credit outside Lyle to meet AME or Leadership requirements with adviser approval.
