Juris Doctor/Business Administration, J.D./M.B.A., Full-Time, Three-Year Program

Overview

The J.D./M.B.A. is offered jointly by the SMU Dedman School of Law and the SMU Cox School of Business. This program is designed for highly motivated and qualified students interested in business law and/or business careers. In this program, students can obtain both degrees in three academic years (with one intensive summer included). Since the Cox School of Business and the Dedman School of Law have different academic calendars, it is important that students become familiar with both calendars when scheduling courses in the same term. Students enrolled in the joint-program must complete all requirements, including all noncredit-bearing requirements.

The 113 credit hour, three-year program comprises 75 credit hours of Dedman Law classes and 38 credit hours of Cox Business classes. Sixteen of these credit hours are satisfied by choosing any combination of the pre-approved, dual counted elective Dedman Law business-related courses listed below. As part of the J.D./M.B.A curriculum, students are required to take MNGT 6210 - Global Leadership Program , which includes international travel to complete a business consulting project. The Dedman School of Law tuition rate applies to the courses taken at the Cox School of Business.

Prospective law students applying for the J.D. program may simultaneously apply for the M.B.A program using the LSAC Application Service. Admission applications should be submitted to both schools, with the selection that the student is applying for the combined J.D./M.B.A. program. Applications for study in the J.D./M.B.A. program are accepted for fall admission only. For an application and additional information from the Dedman School of Law, students should see the Admissions section at www.law.smu.edu. For Cox School of Business admissions information, students should visit www.coxmba.com.

Students who wish to pursue the J.D./M.B.A. after starting their first year of law school must first obtain approval from the SMU Rowling Center for Business Law & Leadership, in consultation with the M.B.A. Admissions Office. Applications must be submitted through the Cox School of Business Admission’s website with assistance, as needed, from the Cox School of Business Admissions Office.

J.D. admission questions should be addressed to the Dedman School of Law: 214-768-2550; lawadmit@smu.edu; or the SMU Rowling Center for Business Law & Leadership; rowlingcenter@smu.edu. M.B.A. admission questions should be addressed to the Cox full-time M.B.A. program: 214-768-1214 or 1-800-472-3622 or mbainfo@cox.smu.edu.
