Product Design and Innovation Concentration

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Lyle School of Engineering: Academic Programs

Product Design and Innovation will be a graduate transcripted concentration within the MA in Design and Innovation program. Students will be taking courses that build upon the foundations in Human-Centered Design and provide a unique focus on the design and innovation of physical products.

The practice of product design and innovation lives at the confluence of industrial design, product engineering, marketing, and business to create products and experiences that people need, want, and desire. In collaboration with local companies and organizations, students and faculty will practice design while bringing innovative solutions to challenging problems. Project emphasis will be on consumer products, especially those that require a multi-disciplinary approach. The breadth will include non-profits, entrepreneurs, small companies, and large global corporations.

The classes for the concentration include:

Students in the MADI program would be able to take these classes within the DSIN degree plan to fulfill their MADI degree and have a concentration without adding more credits. Students would take DSIN 7331 and DSIN 7332 as their two allowed electives and they would take DSIN 7333 instead of DSIN 7315 - Design Studio for Social Impact . Students will still get two full-blown, project-based, client-facing studio experiences that would fulfill the requirements of their MADI degree.
