The J.D./M.B.A. is offered jointly by the SMU Dedman School of Law and the SMU Cox School of Business. This program is designed for highly motivated and qualified students interested in business law careers and/or business roles. In this program, students can obtain both degrees in four academic years. Since the Cox School of Business and the Dedman School of Law have different academic calendars, it is important that students become familiar with both calendars when scheduling courses in the same term. Students enrolled in the joint-program must complete all requirements, including all noncredit-bearing requirements.
During the first year in the joint-program, students must complete the required first-year Dedman Law curriculum. In the second year of the J.D./M.B.A., students will complete the Cox School of Business required core courses, which must be completed in the same order as listed below. The remaining 14 credit hours of elective courses are taken during the third and fourth years of the dual-degree program. To provide students with a broad variety of elective courses, the classes are scheduled in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The Dedman School of Law will award 12 hours of academic credit toward the J.D. degree for satisfactory completion of the academic requirements of the M.B.A. program. Similarly, the Cox School of Business will award 12 hours of academic credit toward the M.B.A. degree for satisfactory completion of the academic requirements of the J.D. program. As part of the J.D./M.B.A curriculum, students are required to take MNGT 6210 - Global Leadership Program , which includes international travel to complete a business consulting project. The Dedman School of Law tuition rate applies to the courses taken at the Cox School of Business.
Prospective law students applying for the J.D. program may simultaneously apply for the M.B.A program using the LSAC Application Service. Admission applications should be submitted to both schools, with the selection that the student is applying for the combined J.D./M.B.A. program. Applications for study in the J.D./M.B.A. program are accepted for fall admission only. For an application and additional information from the Dedman School of Law, students should see the Admissions section at www.law.smu.edu.
