AI for Leaders Graduate Certificate

General Information

SMU’s AI for Leaders Graduate Certificate is designed for busy professionals who want to explore how AI intersects with their field. Taught by leading SMU faculty, this flexible program draws on the university’s rich academic strengths to offer real-world insights into the future of work, leadership, and innovation.

Students will:

  • be able to understand AI Concepts/Technologies
  • be able to understand Ethics and Governance of AI

Admissions Requirements

The AI for Leaders Graduate Certificate requires a baccalaureate degree for admission. Students must fulfill any prerequisite requirements for any of the elective courses. 

If English is not the applicant’s native language, they must submit English language proficiency test scores.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Certificate Requirements


To earn the Certificate, a student must complete 12 credit hours (4 courses from the list of electives), and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 with no grade less than a C- in each individual course. 

Approved course options have been divided into 2 categories: (1) Understanding AI Concepts and Technologies and (2) Ethics and Governance of AI. At least one course must be taken from each of the 2 categories (technology and ethics).

Students may petition for other SMU courses to be considered for credit in addition to those already in the approved course list.

SMU GO will administer an exit assessment to demonstrate levels of mastery of the learning objectives.
