The electrical and computer engineering curriculum is administered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

SMU Degree Requirements

An SMU undergraduate degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and must include completion of the University’s Common Curriculum , one major and a combination of electives and/or other majors or minors. Completion of certain majors requires more than 120 hours to finish the degree. The credit hours within this curriculum are distributed as follows:

Requirements for the Major

Junior Electrical and Computer Engineering Sequences (18 Credit Hours)

Students should complete both of the following sequences for the Computer Engineering Specialization:

Digital Design Sequence:

From the math and science requirements, MATH 3315  is a requirement for this sequence.

Computer Sequence:

From the math and science requirements, CS 2353  is a requirement for this sequence.

Advanced ECE Depth (6 Credit Hours)

Senior Design Sequence (6 Credit Hours)

Total for the Major Only: 97 Credit Hours

*Note: Accelerated Pathways Students (Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in 5 Years). Students should start exploring this option in the spring semester of their sophomore year. Students are encouraged to apply the semester before they reach 90 credit hours. Students will begin taking graduate-level coursework that will be applied to both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees (up to 9 hours). If students are accepted into the Accelerated Pathways in Electrical and Computer Engineering, they will be able to take any three approved ECE 73XX level courses and use them toward their undergraduate and graduate degree (with pre-approval from their undergraduate and graduate adviser).

Note: ECE 8000-level courses are primarily for graduate students but may be taken by highly qualified undergraduates in the accelerated pathway program with the approval of the adviser and the instructor. Only nine credit hours can double count toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Special topics courses are also available.

Each student is expected to complete and file a plan of study with his or her academic adviser. The plan should state specific choices to meet the foregoing requirements and develop an area of concentration when concentration is desired.
