SOSC 7341 - The African Diaspora in France

Discusses some of the most passionate debates on assimilation, difference, and multiculturalism that have emerged in France in recent years, with a special emphasis on the 2005 riots in France. Explores the degree to which the African diaspora in France comprises French citizens versus colonial subjects. Readings in sociology, history, and political philosophy shed light on the nature of human rights in France and examines a form of sovereignty that is based on the “state of exception” and biopolitics. May be used to fulfill the following curricular field concentrations: human rights and social justice; global (non-Western); humanities.
