LAW 7313 - Asian American Jurisprudence Credits: 3
Asian American Jurisprudence, also commonly known as “Asian Crit,” is a subdivision under the umbrella of the Critical Race Theory (“CRT”). Asian American Jurisprudence studies the social struggles in the Asian community’s racialization process in America. Specifically, this course investigates the creation of the Asian American identity and how the American legal system constantly reframes this identity throughout history. Among the topics discussed are citizenship, immigration exclusion, state-sponsored discrimination, the Japanese internment, the model minority myth, racial profiling, and hate crimes. Students are exposed to landmark judicial opinions that significantly impacted the Asian community and relevant scholarships in this field. (*updated* 10/27/2023; effective spring 2024)
