Computational and Applied Mathematics, M.S.

The M.S. in computational and applied mathematics is designed to provide its graduates with knowledge and expertise in mathematics and its application to the sciences, and to provide a strong preparation for those wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in computational or applied mathematics. Program emphases include applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computation. 

Degree Requirements


A total of 33 credit hours of graduate course credit beyond the bachelor’s degree (usually 11 graduate courses) are required for the master’s degree. At least nine courses must be at the 6000 level. Candidates must complete:

Core Courses (12 Credit Hours)


Computational Mathematics (6 Credit Hours)


Differential Equations and Their Applications (6 Credit Hours)


Elective Courses (21 Credit Hours)


Seven courses chosen in consultation with the graduate adviser. A maximum of two approved courses can be taken from outside the mathematics department; these courses must have a strong mathematical component.

Oral Examination


An oral examination is required for graduation.
