Program Description

Program Website

The mission of the M.S. program in Earth Sciences is to provide the highest quality instruction and mentoring that prepares students for advanced professional and academic pathways. The program emphasizes cutting-edge fundamental and applied research addressing societally relevant challenges in Earth Sciences, broadly defined and inclusive of geology, geophysics, remote sensing, biogeochemistry, environmental science and hydrology. Students develop a broad foundation in Earth Science disciplines while gaining the technical expertise needed to solve dynamic, time-dependent Earth processes at local to global scales. Consistent with SMU’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the M.S. program equips graduates with the skills to contribute to the scientific community, pursue further doctoral study, or apply their expertise to careers in industry, government, and nonprofit sectors. The program consists of coursework and independent research resulting in a written thesis and oral defense. The program is delivered in person at the main SMU campus in Dallas, Texas.
