Students will demonstrate abstract and quantitative reasoning by deriving the molecular geometry for molecules. Specifically, the student will first derive Lewis structures for molecules (electron dot diagrams) and then provide electron pair geometry as well as the molecular geometry, bond angles, resonance, and hybridization of molecules.
Students will apply the principles of chemistry, critical thinking and analytical reasoning to solve problems. The application will be on a question in physical chemistry that involves problem solving in phase changes. Â
Students will collect, analyze, test theories and make conclusions from data from a chemical experiment on combustion using modern and classical techniques. The SLO also addresses writing as the student will complete a written lab report.
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the theory and use of instruments in chemistry. The specific assessed example is of gas and liquid chromatography. BS students are trained in instrumentation which is not a requirement of the BA program.
