To earn the B.S. degree with a major in Computer Science, students must complete all University-wide requirements, including the completion of University’s Common Curriculum and satisfy the computer science major requirements listed below. The student can choose between seven different specializations: artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer organization, data engineering, general, research, security, or software engineering.

Note that each of the six categories below must be satisfied. Courses taken for the major cannot be used to satisfy the EDGE requirements with the exception of the Advanced/Domain Specific Use/Design of AI requirement.

Note: Additional Lyle courses may be approved to fulfill requirements in the areas listed below. Students can petition for other courses to be approved to fulfill Lyle EDGE curriculum requirements.

Nine credit hours of CS courses at the 3000 level or above as approved by the adviser. The adviser may approve other sufficiently technical courses from other departments to satisfy the Technical elective requirements. Technical electives cannot be satisfied by courses that are part of the student’s chosen track.

Students who are also enrolled in a major or minor program in the Cox School of Business may request leadership courses from these programs to substitute for the Computer Science leadership courses. These requests must be approved by the Computer Science Department. Other courses at the 3000 level or above may be petitioned to meet this requirement with prior approval by adviser. CS courses used to meet this requirement may not also meet a CS elective requirement.

Students must complete advanced major electives in Computer Science courses numbered 4000 or above as approved by the adviser. CS 4340 may not be used to meet this requirement.

Note: Students who take CS 5315 to fulfill the Lyle EDGE Leadership and Mentoring requirements are required to take 3 credits of advanced major electives. All other students must take 5 credits of advanced major electives. Students may petition to count up to 6 credit hours of Lyle courses from other departments numbered 4000 or above toward advanced major electives with advisor approval

Note: All computer science majors must earn a grade of C- or better in the computer science core courses and CS 2353 in fulfillment of the requirements for the major. Students may petition for up to 6 hours of credit outside Lyle to meet AME or Leadership requirements with adviser approval.
