Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Game Development’s arts coursework develops foundational skills in drawing, modeling, and creative production - all essential for building a specialized game art graduate admissions portfolio. Individual undergraduate work must demonstrate proficiency in visualizing digital spaces within the technological affordances and constraints of real-time 3D game engines. Accordingly, the B.A. in Game Development is structured to allow and encourage students preparing for a graduate game development program with a game art focused specialization to pursue a second major in Drawing or Sculpture.
The game development major prepares graduates to think critically, design creatively, and cross functionally communicate in the evolving landscape of interactive entertainment and digital media of game development. A combination of skills-based and studio-based coursework builds a portfolio for a public exhibition to showcase each student’s artifacts. The following outcomes represent the skills, knowledge, and dispositions expected of all program graduates:
Creative and Technical Game Development Proficiency - Graduates will apply design theory, systems thinking, and technical skills to conceptualize, prototype, and produce innovative game content.
Professional Practice and Presentation Proficiency - Graduates will demonstrate professional behaviors and be able to exhibit their digital game artifacts.
Specialized Portfolio Proficiency - Graduates will be able to submit a portfolio to specialized graduate game development programs.
Innovation, Research, and Continued Learning - Graduates will be able to integrate emerging technologies, creativity, and design thinking to analyze and evaluate the mixed media serious and commercial games industries.
